ReplyDeleteWell, whatever floats your boat, but this book to which you keep referring was written a few thousand years ago and is simply not relevant (nor should it be!) to most of our cultural questions today. If you wish to start invoking all the rules of the Bible all I can say is be careful what you ask for.

My mentor was a college professor---Ford Thomas Mailloux. He said almost the same words that you just said. There was a spider on his living room floor and he dared God to kill the spider. In his hostility and defiance---just like yours---he gave God seven seconds to smite the spider. When God did not obey, he said he would, out of "compassion" give God ten more seconds. With defiance and fists raised against the Living God, I too showed no empathy, compassion, or grace---calling others names and being sarcastic---just like you are doing. Atheists cannot keep their cool much of the time---always angry, spiteful, and hateful---just like you are.

ReplyDeleteHave you noticed that Western Civilization is free of slavery, the caste system and other codified subjugation that characterizes other parts of the world? What is the value system that informed and inspired Western Civilization's abolishment of slavery? It's still very much in practice in African and Arab countries. The almost equally cruel and unjust caste system is still very much a part of life in India. Before bashing the MORAL and ETHICAL advances brought to the world through the establishment of Judeo-Christian principles which elevate human liberty, you should compare the relative justice offered by Western Civilization to societies that don't value human liberty. In WHAT non-western culture could a woman, a gay or a minority take his government to task for discrimination? We certainly don't uphold individual liberty perfectly but the Judeo-Christian ethics clearly inspire a more just society than do more primitive ones.

ReplyDeleteJudeo-Christian ethics were merely a reflection of the mores of the society at the time. It was indeed a primitive step toward what we now consider good behavior in our Western community. All of the so-called ethics of the Bible are just the ideas that came from the people who wrote it. If you want to know more about a god, just look at the people who invented it. The fact that so many people have adhered to the surviving faiths speaks only to their ability to ignore so much of it. We do not derive our ethics from scripture. Instead we bring our own learned ethics and filter the scripture accordingly.

ReplyDeleteRegardless of the source - a value system that elevates human liberty, abolishes codified subjugation of people and provides the foundation of a society in which an individual CAN improve his own standing is superior to one that fails in each of these areas. Can we agree on that much?
ReplyDeleteI can agree on that much, but I fail to see how the standards found in the Bible can be found to consistently support such a value system. Subjugation of people seems to be an integral part of "god's plan." And individualism is a very recent addition. It came as a byproduct of the Western Catholic Church's destruction of the extended family in a (very successful) endeavor to enrich itself.
